Techniques

Over the years my filmformat has developed from 35mm to (ultra-)large-format; the dimensions of my images have slowly shifted from rather square (35mm, 6x6, 4x5", 8x10",11x14") to more and more streched, more panoramic (6x17cm, 4x10", 8x20" and 12x20"). Also, I have become interested in the subtlety of the contactprint; the refinement, the sharpness and presence of these prints, the long tonal scale and the premeditated character of this type of photography (tripod, groundglass) have had great influence on my way of seeing. I guess it is my Dutch background that has made me become more and more interested in the panoramic image. In the Dutch landscape a lot of things happen on the horizon rather than above, or under the horizon. On the horizontal plane there is a lot to see, on the vertical plane much less so. Somewhere along the line I simply started to skip foregrounds and skies.

Photographers who have had influence on my seeing are Josef Sudek, Minor White, Art Sinsabaugh, Josef Koudelka, Lewis Baltz and Michael A. Smith.

In addition to my work as a free-lance photographer I have specialized as a free-lance professional B & W printer, working for a number of clients and institutions.
