I got interested in the marble quarries in about 1989. What would those places be like where we have been digging into the earth for ages and where we inflict our will upon nature?
The quarry, a metaphor for human behaviour that causes irreparable damage to nature - we human beings seem to have to leave our traces behind.
My initial visits to this area have over the years turned into a kind of loveaffair which has continued until the present day. I have photographed the area around Carrara (It.) many, many times, worked under all weather-conditions, followed the stones from quarries to studios to the harbours.I have damned and loved the quarries - and worked from totally abstract to highly documentary.
