Myanmar, 2000
Given the fact that former Birma is relatively reticent I was quite curious about this country. By boycotting it as a possible destination for traveling because of the regime, one also takes away the normal population the possiblity to get in touch with individuals from other parts of the world. I wanted to find out whether it was possible to travel through this country in a simple way and on an individual basis. Traveling through Birma has been a delight. I seldom encountered a country in which one get such a strong feeling of authenticity as far as the people are concerned. I spoke to many people who indicated that they suffered strongly under the military regime. However, people were surprisingly well-informed about the present situation in the west - I sensed a strong desire to freedom. My impression was that that there was a strong and impressive sense of solidarity among the people due to a common aversion against the military regime.
