New York, 2001

I have been visiting the USA, and New York in particular, from the moment I started photographing.
Over the last years I tend to photograph horizontally in this vertical city: first in 4x5", later in 6x17cm. I started to see less foreground and less sky. I got intrigued by the attempt to fill a 1:3 frame in an interesting manner. What's happening on the left, what's happening on the right, how does that affect the centre of the image? New York is busy, so concentrating on the space around you is an absolute exercise in concentration.
In addition to cruising the city east-west and south-north I also circled around the city more and more; what's happening in the periphery of such a metropolis? What does one find there? How does the city look like outside the area that everybody knows?
